Not Just For Rides: The Many Uses of a UTV

We talk a lot about all the different kinds of riding. Mud riding, rock climbing, trail riding, racing, and more. However, your UTV is built for so much more than just riding! UTV does stand for ‘Utility’ Terrain Vehicle after all.

Today, we take a look at the different ways you can use your UTV!

Towing

Usually, your UTV is the one getting towed. Now, UTVs are more powerful than ever. As the machines have gotten bigger and better, so has their towing capacity.

Newer models of the Can-Am Defender 6×6 have a 3,000 lb towing capacity. This is currently an industry leader, but most UTVs can still tow 2,000-2,500 lbs.

If the paths on the way to the lake are too narrow for your truck, a UTV can be a suitable boat-towing solution.

Ice Fishing

Talking about fishing…

UTV’s can often get more traction in the snow and ice than your regular vehicle. Your SUV also doesn’t like to drive over snow banks as much as your UTV’s will.

A Razorback Offroad Expedition Rack is the perfect place to store rods, tackle boxes, lunch, snow pants, and eventually, a cooler for your trophy catches from the frozen pond.

Landscaping

A UTV can be a landscaper’s best friend, in one case, it even saved me days, if not weeks of extra work.

While I was in college, I had a summer job at the baseball fields as a Field Maintenance Manager. Every day I’d cut grass, shovel shale, repair mounds and so much more.

One day I showed up and there was a mountain of shale dumped on the infield. I shortly after got a text on my phone, saying it had to be distributed across the field in two days.

This task would’ve been impossible without a cargo bed to haul around my shovels… and all that dirt.

After I laid out all the shale, I pulled a heavy leveler behind the UTV to make sure the infield was even.

Yard Work

When it comes to even the most practical of uses, a UTV can help make a tedious job a little more fun.

Whether you’re putting up a fence, cleaning up your acreage after a rowdy party from the night before, or anything in between, a UTV provides so many with the utility they need to get a chore done in half the time.

Plowing Snow

A Canadian’s dream come true.

The snow plows we carry are some of UTV Canada’s favourite parts. If you live on an acreage or a farm, you need an effective way to clear snow without breaking your back.

Not only does it reduce your time spent clearing snow, but you can stay warmer doing it! With a cab enclosure and a heater, you don’t even have to be cold while you clear the snow off your long driveway.

Hunting

A UTV can be a hunter’s best friend. It can help you bring all the essentials to the hunt!

A UTV is able to get you to any destination quickly, and provides storage for your hunting rifles, animal calls, outdoor attire, snacks and more.

Your 4×4 truck might not be able to get to the remote destination you need it to. Your UTV is often much better suited for the conditions like narrow trails, steep inclines, and deep mud holes.

The best UTVs for hunting are quiet. With the introduction of the Polaris Ranger EV, there is now a UTV that leaves behind a minimal audio footprint.

Using a UTV for hunting also gives you a method of transport for big trophies from the great outdoors.

Camping

Camping and riding go hand in hand. We hear about the great times had by so many customers on their offroading trips.

One spot in Alberta that riders love to visit, is Outwest Camping Grounds by Rocky Mountain House in Alberta.

What’s better than being able to camp, fish, and ride all weekend?

UTV’s also have uses in the professional world that can help keep people safe, or even save lives!

Security

Did you know the NFL also uses UTVs for game-day security?

In 2018, the NFL used 10 customized RANGER XP 1000s during the Super Bowl in Minnesota to help keep the crowd safe!

Healthcare

If you’ve seen a major injury in a CFL game, there’s a chance you saw a UTV drive onto the field shortly after to load the player into the cargo bed.

Oftentimes, in an outdoor environment, a UTV is the quickest, safest way to transport an injured person to a medical facility.

In 2010, BC Emergency Health Services (BCEHS) even brought in 2 UTVs to serve as ambulances during the 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games.

While these were used mostly to transport, they can help stabilize an injured patient and provide a spot for early treatment.

Firefighting

As we’ve talked about already, UTVs will be able to get to so many areas where larger vehicles simply can’t.

If there’s a small fire in a remote location, it might be far easier to fight the flames from a UTV!

We are able to equip UTVs with equipment for emergency responses. Whether you need to haul a patient out, or you need to carry over 50 gallons of water to a remote destination we can help you be prepared for all scenarios.

Check out how cool some of this stuff from QTAC which is used to help outfit a UTV for firefighting!

Military

Since 1980, Polaris has been making UTVs and ATVs for the U.S Military.

The vehicles that Polaris makes for the military are even more amped up than stock machines. They upgrade the suspension, durability, performance and so much more to ensure the machine can handle whatever is thrown at it.

Forestry & Logging

UTVs can be very useful in the Forestry and Logging industry. Sometimes they’re simply used for transport. They’re also good for clearing snow on the paths less traveled! A UTV can even winch trees to prepare them for hauling.

Tens, if not hundreds of uses

As you can tell, these machines are incredibly versatile. There are so many more ways you can use your UTV outside of what is provided in this blog.
